COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
How does the mentorship work? We’ll have at least two video calls a month. One individual call, just you and me and one longer group call (additional individual calls are possible) You’ll have access to the private mentorship group chat via discord to keep the conversation going between calls. I provide daily inspiration via the daily-reference chat which you’re encouraged to work from, you can also use your own reference and inspiration. Sketch practice! I recommend a regular sketch practice. Get a sketchbook and take it with you everywhere! How much time you spend sketching is up to you. Even 5 minutes a day will add up to a lot of sketching, once you're in the zone and inspired you may be surprised how much time you spend sketching. Sketching throughout the weeks may provide you with insights and avenues of exploration to bring to the mentorship sessions. The sketches can be independent or adjacent to your larger works and may even lead to inspiration for a body of work.
Is previous experience necessary? A general curiosity and desire to learn drawing and painting are the only prerequisites. You may be starting on your artistic journey open for guidance from someone who know’s how challenging and rewarding it is to work through the early challenges. Or an established professional who feels that collaborative input and an external perspective could benefit your creative practice. Or anywhere in between. You may want to work on a specific challenge or feel that you have so much to work on you don’t know where to begin. Together we'll be able to set realistic goals which will be a guiding star to your development.
What supplies are needed? You can really just get started with a pencil and a notebook. I recommend a sketch book for your sketch practice. Perhaps you have specific materials you’d like to develop with, or I may make some suggestions as we work together for tools
Is attendance mandatory? What if I can’t make a call? Individual calls will be scheduled between you and me. I’m fairly flexible and able to cater to different time zones and needs you may have. Once a call has been scheduled for the month I’d appreciate the appointment being kept. Life happens and If you need to reschedule please do so asap. Group calls will be scheduled on the last Friday of the month to the benefit of all. The times may vary depending on the time zone most participants inhabit. Those not in the majority timezone wise will also be catered to. As these will be extended sessions there’s a possibility to join late or leave early if need be. However you will benefit from the experience of others in the group and this is a valuable key communal learning opportunity. Recordings of group calls will be made available to all participants so if you can’t make it you can still have the benefit of watching or listening to the conversations had.
Is there a minimum/maximum duration of the mentorship? At present the mentorship can be undertaken in three month blocks. This is the minimum amount of time to really get established in our work together. For me to get to know your challenges and for you to start seeing direct results from the effort you put into our collaboration. It can be extended in additional three month increments for as long as you feel you are growing and benefiting from my guidance.
What’s the workload? There are two live calls a month. Individual calls are 1 hour, half way through the month with very flexible timing. We’ll schedule a time to meet. And the group calls are at the end of each month and will potentially be up to 3 hours long. There is also an option to book additional individual calls if you feel they could be beneficial to your practice and progress.
Beyond the calls the more time you’re able to dedicate to your practice the more progress you’ll see. That being said even if it’s just 5 to 10 minutes a day, daily sketch practice is hugely beneficial. At the end of the week you’ve spent over an hour sketching and probably even longer when you get into the flow. I’ll be providing daily reference via the group server and I strongly recommend you join my Tuesday sessions if you’re able to make them. Admission to these is included in the mentorship program.
What tech is required? You’ll need a device capable of video conference calling. We meet via Zoom for the calls and the Drawing With Dylan server where work can be shared, feedback and conversed is hosted via Discord. Both Zoom and Discord have dedicated apps for desktop and mobile devices AND can be accessed via internet browser. A camera/phone to photograph and share your work will be necessary. If necessary I'll provide technical support to get you set up.
Dates and times of Zoom calls? These will be scheduled according to your personal preference for individual calls. Group calls are on the last Friday of the month. Individual calls will be scheduled around mid month for a biweekly rhythm. The scheduling of the individual calls is flexible and we'll sort that out together.
How much direct access to you do I get Dylan? At least one hour per month in the individual call, up to three hours in the group call. Additional individual calls can be booked. I’m also available for questions between those appointments via the Drawing with Dylan mentorship channel on the community server. Posing your questions there has the added benefit that all mentorship participants can benefit from each other’s development and insights.
How does access to recordings work and how long? Zoom sessions will be recorded and I will share a private link to those recordings. As long as the internet continues to function, the video hosting websites and as long as I’m still able to continue the administration of these websites you’ll have access to the videos. You can also download them, and should anything foreseeable change in the video hosting services in the future I’ll inform you so you can download the content you desire.
How does this differ from my other online offerings? This is the only context to receive direct ongoing guidance and support from me. I share numerous tutorials, courses and ‘draw along’ events. None of them can offer the familiarity, the ongoing relationship and developmental guidance that the mentorship program does. As we become acquainted with each other I’ll see your ongoing development, help you recognise where your chances for growth and associated challenges are.
What will we work on? Predominantly portraiture but you can bring any project to our meetings that you’re passionate about. I’ll provide daily reference for your sketch practice which you can also use as reference for more in depth work. You’ll likely develop you’re own projects and
How much does participation cost and how do I pay? Participation is 290€ per month with a minimum duration of three months. Pay 3 months upfront for 840€ payments are to be made via PayPal or credit card. Bank transfer possible within the EU.
How many participants will be in the mentorship? There will be a maximum of 12 participants. Depending on the timezones and practicality for participants there may be two group calls. Both will be recorded and made available to the while group should you want to listen into the conversation and development of other mentorees.
What is community access? Parallel to the live calls we have a private channel in the Drawing with Dylan server. This is hosted on the Discord platform which allows conversations, direct messaging, file sharing and is like an old school chat room. Daily reference photos and work inspired by them are shared via the public Daily-reference thread. Users can share their own references in one channel, ask for feedback in another, share resources in another.
